Mental Toughness

The ability to stand your ground, persevere, move forward and accomplish your goals.  In surfing the white waters kept pushing me back.  The ocean floor was flat with a long gradual tapering slope going out to sea.  This meant the white waters went out about a quarter of a mile.  You could go out to sea for a half mile with the water only coming up to your neck.  This created a long stretch of white waters that kept relentlessly pushing me back from some of the ground I would gain.  It took a little while before I could get outside the waves and start catching them.  Standing your ground does not mean you do not get pushed back but what it means is you do not give up and do not give into it but are relentless in your pursuit.  Mental toughness is also about using temperance and control over your emotions with a calm confidence. This does not mean you don'€™t get strongly determinate.  But what it means is that you temper and control your emotions to direct in a positive productive manner.  However, "ultimate toughness" goes beyond the mind into the "inner man," the "spirit of man," the "heart."

Entering The Flow State

Creating, changing and controlling the rhythms of your state of being.

Positive Affirmations / Self-Talk

Too many times too much work is spent on getting rid of negative emotions.  Yes, address the negative emotions and the past events and deal with them but, spend only a small portion of the time in dealing with them.  I like to spend the majority of the time on positive thoughts and affirmations.  To spend a lot of time on trying to correct negative emotions is like trying to empty a glass filled with mud using a spoon.  Just as soon as you get the glass half empty some other incident happens to fill the glass up again with mud.  It becomes a vicious cycle that goes nowhere with very little results.  There is a way to get rid of the mud in the glass while at the same time creating a shield that protects the glass from getting refilled with mud.  With this one action you create two results.  Hold the glass under the faucet and run water into it.  The mud will get flushed out by the water while at the same time the water creates a shield preventing more mud from being put into the glass.  This is what you do when you flood your mind with positive thoughts and affirmations.  In psychology it is called €œflooding.

Creating Anchors

In your mind'€™s eye.  Understanding and using the photo chemicals of your brain power to create positive anchors and destroy negative ones.

Porpoising

It is an up-and-down rollercoaster-like motion.  Flying  in wind turbulence will cause the plane to go up-and-down and a pilot is tempted to keep trying to correct this motion.  As the pilot keeps trying to perform a counter motion the plane will start to porpoise.  To settle the plane down the pilot must fix the controls to level flight as best as possible without over reacting in the correction.  The plane will eventually settle down.  But as long as the pilot keeps reacting to the turbulance the porpoising will continue and get worse.  It is this way in life.  When we keep reacting to the trials and tribulantion we face we will only make things worse while they continue.  In life we must be fixed to a certain standard of living and operating.  And when the difficulties come we must stay true to this standard in order to settle down.  In acquiring my multi-engine instrument rating in flying this was very important  to learn.
